A few things applicants usually ask.

Am I an employee or a genuine contractor here? +
You operate under an independent service agreement. You set your own fees, choose your own hours, and hold full clinical autonomy over your caseload. This is a genuine contractor arrangement, not an employee role dressed up as one.
Can I also work at other practices? +
Yes. There are no non-competes or restraints of trade in the service agreement, so working elsewhere alongside this is entirely your choice.
Who owns my clients? +
You do. There is no restraint of trade or non-compete attached to your caseload. If a client looks you up after you have moved on, that is not treated as a breach of anything.
How does the service fee actually work? +
The service fee is tiered and steps down as your monthly billings grow, capped at a maximum for the period. The more you work, the more of it you keep. Full fee schedule details are provided to shortlisted applicants.
Do I need to bring my own clients? +
No. There is an established, active referral network already in place. If you have existing clients or referral relationships you would like to bring, that is welcome too.
What hours am I expected to work? +
There is no fixed roster and no minimum day commitment. Many practitioners fit this around school hours, existing roles, or parental leave. You decide what works.
Can I just work online? +
Yes. A telehealth-only caseload is entirely workable if that is what suits you.
Is supervision available? +
Formal clinical supervision is available on the same paid basis it would be with any external supervisor, since the director is a Board Approved Clinical Supervisor. Day to day, you will also have informal support close at hand, particularly around the practical side of managing your own private practice.
What do I need to have in place already? +
Current AHPRA registration and your own professional indemnity insurance. Full requirements are confirmed with shortlisted applicants during the conversation.

This opportunity was built for where you already are.

This is a genuinely flexible model. There's no fixed roster, no exclusive commitment, and no expectation that this replaces existing work.

🤱

Returning from parental leave

A flexible private practice base that fits around your availability, with no pressure to commit to full-time hours.

🏫

School or education-based psychologist

Supplement your school-based work with 1–2 days per week in private practice, accessing clinical assessment caseload aligned with what you already do.

📋

Seeking assessment-focused work

Already working in another private practice but wanting additional assessment caseload without the overhead of building referral pathways yourself.

🔄

Transitioning toward independent practice

Moving toward portfolio-based or independent practice and wanting to reduce overhead while maintaining access to strong, established referral demand.

🎯

Bring your own clients or referrals

Bring your existing caseload, choose the clients you want to work with, and explore a clinical niche. We can assist with targeted referral pathways to support the work you want to be doing.

Why boutique, not corporate
This isn't a corporate psychology practice. It's a private practice built by a psychologist, for psychologists.

Over more than a decade in private practice, I've focused on one thing: providing excellent clinical care while creating a professional environment where psychologists can do their best work.

Rather than growing into a large multi-site organisation, I've deliberately built a smaller practice where clinicians get genuine support, aren't competing internally for referrals, and aren't treated as interchangeable contractors.

If you're looking for endless meetings, rigid KPIs, and layers of management, we probably aren't the right fit.

If you're looking for autonomy, consistent referrals, high clinical standards, and a practice that genuinely values professional competence, I'd love to speak with you.

Neither model is wrong. One is built for you.

A large clinic and a boutique practice serve very different clinicians. Neither is a mistake to choose. But if you want direct access to the person making decisions, referrals that are not shared across a roster of other psychologists, and systems that flex around how you actually work, this is the model built for that.

Direct access to the practice owner

Agreements reviewed for fairness and transparency

Referrals are not shared across a roster of clinicians

Fast, personal decisions

Systems that flex around how you work

Where independent practice sits.

Not every arrangement that calls itself flexible actually is. Here's how the independent practitioner model compares to the alternatives.

1. Employee
Told what to do, when, and how
+Steady, guaranteed income
Little control over caseload or hours
Earnings capped regardless of effort
Limited clinical autonomy
2. Sham contractor
Called a contractor, treated like an employee
+Looks flexible on paper
No leave, super, or workers cover
No say over your clients, fees, or process
KPI-based pay, with none of the ownership or equity
Still managed and supervised by other psychologists
This is what we offer
3. Independent practitioner
Your practice, backed by real support
+Full control of your caseload and hours
+Keep the majority of your billings
+Genuine clinical autonomy
+Backed by referrals, admin, and rooms
4. Business owner
Every part of the business is on you
+Full ownership and long-term equity
Full financial and legal risk
Heavy admin and compliance load
Less time for actual clinical work

What wage and sham contracting roles often look like.

Not what gets said in the job ad. What actually ends up on your plate.

Reception work you did not sign up for
Answering phones and doing intake for other staff, on top of your own clinical load.
Managing other staff
Supervisory and people-management responsibility that was never part of the plan.
Clinical oversight of other people's cases
Carrying responsibility for work and clients that are not yours.
Covering other people's clients
When a colleague takes leave, their caseload lands on top of yours.
Marketing that does not really market
You are told they will help you find your ideal clients. In practice that is often a social media post and a fax to a GP clinic that ends up in the bin. So you see whoever walks in the door, whether it is the right fit or not, because by then you need the income.

We platform your practice.

You bring the clinical skill. We bring the infrastructure that lets it run as a practice, not a side hustle.

Sham contracting leaves you with less. A platform lets you keep more.

A fixed percentage takes a bigger slice every time you work harder. Our fee works the other way, so more of what you earn stays with you.

Practitioners operating under a service agreement set their own fees and run their own independent practice. The tiered structure and monthly cap mean the service fee shrinks as a proportion of your billings the more you work. The income context above reflects current fee levels at CAYA and is provided for reference only. Full service agreement terms, including the fee schedule, are provided to shortlisted applicants.

Who you'll be working with.

Joe Lewsey — Registered Psychologist Geelong

Joe Lewsey

Director & Board Approved Supervisor — Geelong

I'm a Registered Psychologist based in Geelong with more than 12 years of full-time clinical experience working with kids, teens, and adults.

Six clients a day. Four days a week. For over a decade.
That's more than 8,000 hours of therapy sessions.

Which means I've seen most of the ways a private practice can thrive — and most of the ways it quietly goes off track, including the wage and sham contracting patterns above, firsthand.

This opportunity exists because I've built referral pipelines, systems, and a clinical reputation that generates more demand than one practitioner can meet. I'm looking for someone who wants to do serious clinical work in a well-supported environment, without spending years building it themselves.
